Tools: Projector + laptop + bluetooth speakers

Atttendees: active & inactive translators, half of them new to the project (either not active, or signed up within the last month), In total 12 workshop participants, out of 20 who signed up for the event


Goal: Networking - allowing the community members to meet face to face and create bonds that will allow them to cooperate online with ease and enthusiasm. Establishing a community so that the translators can later meet for transcribathons or mini-transcription events at local cafes - Additionally, to make a quick overview of the tools used for translation as well as the TED translators resources and key issues in transcription and translation

Format: Icebreaker + Presentations with exercises, discussions, Q and A session

Registration Survey: The topics above were sourced from an online registration survey filled out three weeks before the workshop. The survey asked two key questions: what is your experience within the TED translators' project and what would you like to do/talk about during the workshop.

Detailed agenda

I could talk about food all day :) Vegetarian soup + tart + apple pie + snacks + cookies


2. Thanks! Welcome - agenda overview - Kinga

3. Icebreaker - You're unique! - Kinga We give everyone a piece of paper and a felt pen/crayon Everyone is asked to quickly sketch three things that make them unique. The sketches can be rough and are supposed to show something that sets them apart from others or is their strong characteristic. Once everybody finished, they sign their drawing and are asked to explain the drawing to another person they are paired up with. Next, everybody introduces the person they are paired up with while showing the drawings and explaining what they mean. Then the drawings can be put on a wall, so that people can associate the stories with the names and review them during the break as conversation starters :)

5. Transcription - introduction & exercise - Kinga (based on Asia Pietrulewicz's presentation)

Compression exercises are very engaging and even more so when they are done on paper. Before reviewing with everybody it is good to let people talk about what they have removed/compressed in pairs. For longer fragments it is good to provide context.

7. English to Polish translation examples and compression discussion – Kinga, based on Dorota Konowrocka's presentation

Dorota created a bi-lingual presentation in which she gave the original sentence, the sentence proposed by the translator and then her revision of the translation. We discussed the reasons for the changes, possible alternatives and the importance of shortening and paraphrasing.

8. Is that a mistake? Screenshots from shows/movies with subtitles: Interactive quiz - Kinga

Each person was given a set of two post its: green and pink - they were supposed to raise their post it - green for correct, pink for incorrect upon seeing different screenshots with subtitles in them - when they claimed the subtitle is incorrect they had to provide an explanation why. We focused on the length, breaking the subtitles, sound iformation, correcting grammar and replacing proper names for different contexts


9. Subtitle Edit - Fixing legacy transcripts - Krystian

We've shown the video on SubtitleEdit and how it is used to fix old transcripts and Krystian answered a few questions on this software.

10. Q and A session – Kinga

I answered a few questions about being a language coordinator.


  1. It really is necessary to send everybody a reminder about the workshop 2 days before (I had sent a confirmation one week before) - I think it could have made more people come (even though they registered)
  2. If you don't mention in the invitation that the workshop is free, a lot of people will assume it is paid
  3. It was a good idea to give contact details to the translators in advance with a break into tasks: Mine for questions concerning scheduling, and Sylwia's for questions concerning the venue
  4. It is necessary to address the issue of lots of talks needing reviews: by organizing revieweathons and allowing less experienced users to review provided they are ready for it (how to judge?)
  5. A lot of people called to ask if it is okay if they come even though they are not very experienced - so it's good to stress that the workshop is open to everybody, no matter their experience (We did, just not strong enough)
  6. It would be good to ask everybody to join the event/local community group on Facebook prior the event, not after the event.
